Rock Inn Cafe
About This Spot
Stepping into Rock Inn Cafe in Memphis, Texas, feels like entering a warm nod to country hospitality where familiar faces and a laid-back rhythm invite you to pause and savor the moment. The small-town charm settles quickly—wooden booths and rustic décor set a comfortable scene, making it easy to slip away from the rush of the road or the day. The mood here isn’t hurried; it’s unpretentious and genuine, just like the friendly hellos from the servers who know many customers by name and carry a down-home politeness that calls you “ma’am” or “sir” with no pretension.
This is a place where breakfast lingers into lunch and conversations unfold over plates filled with comforting, hearty fare. The kitchen turns out dishes that feel both familiar and lovingly crafted—a tender, hand-battered chicken fried steak that’s just right, thick-cut catfish with a crust that speaks of tradition, and sides that echo neighborhood gatherings, like crisp homemade onion rings and golden okra. Whether it’s a quick pit stop or a deliberate leisurely meal, the menu offers a wide, welcoming variety that matches the diverse appetites of locals and travelers alike.
Though the pace can vary, there’s a steady hum of genuine care from the staff, even when the place is bustling with families sharing Sunday morning breakfasts or road warriors seeking familiar flavors after long miles. It’s that very human combination of comfort food and a feeling of belonging that draws people back again and again—all wrapped in the kind of setting where you can relax, take your time, and enjoy both good food and the simple pleasure of authentic hospitality.

On Friday, August 1st, my husband and I took off across country on a road trip to Myrtle Beach, SC. For dinner, we stopped at Rock Inn Cafe in Memphis, Texas. It’s a cute country styled cafe with friendly staff. I grew up saying “yes ma’am, no ma’am and yes sir, no sir “. Now I was the one being ma’amed . We both ended up ordering the Chicken Fried Steak meal. That included two pieces of hand battered steak with homemade cream gravy, fresh cut fries, and a salad. The Rock Inn Cafe claims their chicken fried steak is what made them famous. I’d agree. The steak was basically fork tender and packed with flavor!! Most chicken fried steak is bland and you need the gravy for flavor. Gravy is an option for this dish, it’s delicious either way. I’d definitely recommend the Rock Inn Cafe if you’re ever in Memphis, Texas

I like this place—a pleasant surprise. Catfish platter for $11.99? Incredible piece of fish. Thick cut. Burger for $7.99 (in 2024)? Great. Not a frozen patty. Fries delish. Nice waitress. Would definitely recommend. I had a burger in Western Colorado 2 days later, and that was okay. So overall, 5 star.

Quick breakfast stop on a Sunday morning. My wife had Pa’s Favorite Breakfast and she enjoyed it. She said everything was cooked perfectly. I had a Red Raider Burger. The burger was really good but a tad on the greasy side to the point that I didn’t finish the last bit of the bun because it was soaked with grease. The fries were not good: they were greasy and soggy. I could only eat a few of them. Service was just ok. I had a cup of coffee that I finished pretty quickly and it went un refilled even after being told “I’ll be right back with some coffee for you”, and it never came. Prices are really good here, though, with our meal coming in around $25! So, overall, I’d rate them at a 4. Give em a try!

Food is excellent with good prices, the room was way to hot. The service was slow. 2 nights in a row I had Maria for a waitress and she apparently doesn't listen to customers or doesn't know the difference between sweet and unsweet tea. Love this place but the room was extremely hot to the point of sweating and when asked if the heat could be turned down they refused and said wasn't allowed to adjust. When asked for a manager she apparently was not in the building. If adjusting the temp is more important than customers. I won't be back.

Randomly stopped to eat while on the road and we don't regret it! Very cool place with nice staff. Food was delicious! They had steak fingers and they were the bomb.
